What is Ransomware?

Ransomware has been around for years, but we would like to remind you of the threat it poses.

Ransomware is the latest and fastest growing online threat, it’s a form of malicious software (or malware). Once activated it takes over your computer and usually denies you access to your data. The attacker then demands a ransom from the victim, to restore access to the data upon payment.

Like all viruses it gains access through security failings in networks and software, or tricks users to install it through a download hidden in a web page or links in an email. Disguising itself as a legitimate file it has been particularly effective, which has led security experts to warn businesses everywhere to be extra diligent and ensure they have a monitored, working cloud backup.

If infected, all system data is encrypted and held hostage until the user agrees to pay the proposed ransom through BitCoin or other hard to trace online payment methods. These ransoms can range anywhere from a few hundred pounds to over tens of thousands of pounds!

To make sure you are prepared, you need protection and a business continuity plan in place. This will allow you to maintain business as usual, and recover within a quick and realistic time frame, when disaster strikes.
